Bangladesh were bowled out for 272 in their first innings on the second day of the first Test against West Indies at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Thursday (October 29), following a middle-order collapse engineered by spinner Jomel Warrican.
Opting to bat first after winning the toss on Wednesday (October 28), the hosts survived 97.4 overs before losing their final wicket, unable to capitalize fully on a solid platform laid by opener Shadman Islam.
Shadman top-scored for Bangladesh with a resilient 105 off 234 balls, featuring 11 boundaries, while middle-order batter Towhid Hridoy contributed 42 off 86 balls and wicketkeeper-batsman Litton Das remained unbeaten on 34. Former captain Mominul Haque chipped in with 28, while current skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto managed 19.
Left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican was the standout performer for the West Indian bowling attack, taking five wickets for 53 runs in 23.4 overs, supported by debutant Joshua Bishop and pacer Shamar Joseph, who picked up two wickets each, while Jayden Seales took one.
Bangladesh suffered an early setback after losing their first wicket with just nine runs on the board, but Shadman anchored the innings through steady partnerships with Mominul and Shanto before building an 88-run fourth-wicket stand alongside Hridoy to position the hosts strongly.
However, the match turned sharply in favor of the visitors when Shadman fell in the 77th over for 105, triggering a rapid collapse that saw Bangladesh slip from 221 for three to 221 for five in quick succession, with only Litton offering late resistance as the tail faltered.
The Tigers will now aim to exert pressure with the ball and restrict West Indies to a modest total to regain control of the opening Test match.
