The International Crimes Tribunal-2 is set to deliver its verdict today, Thursday (October 29), in a crimes against humanity case over the killing of six people in Kushtia during the July mass uprising. The accused include banned Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif.

The three other accused are Kushtia district Awami League President Sadar Uddin Khan, General Secretary Azgar Ali and Kushtia town Awami League General Secretary Ataur Rahman Ata.

A three-member judicial panel led by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury will deliver the verdict. The other members are Justices Md Manjurul Bashid and Noor Mohammad Shahriar Kabir.

The tribunal reserved the case for a verdict on October 7 after hearing arguments from both the prosecution and the defence. The date was later set on October 27.

Charges against the accused

According to case documents, Azgar Ali said at a speech outside the Kushtia district Awami League office on July 27, 2024, that party leader Hanif had instructed them to suppress the movement by any means. The prosecution highlighted the statement during its arguments.

The prosecution brought three charges against the accused, including supporting a position favouring the suppression of the movement, conspiring at a meeting in Kushtia on July 29 to order the killing of protesters and being involved in the killing of six people.

A total of 19 witnesses, excluding the investigation officer, testified in the case. All four accused are currently absconding, prompting the appointment of state-funded lawyers to represent them.

How the trial began

Six people were killed and several others injured in Kushtia during the July mass uprising. The prosecution formally filed charges against the four accused on October 6 last year, and the trial began on November 2.

The tribunal had previously reserved the case for a verdict on June 10 after hearing arguments. However, further evidence submitted by the prosecution led to another round of arguments.
