Three senior police officers have emerged as potential candidates for the IGP post amid speculation over the removal of incumbent Ali Hossain Fakir following his controversial remarks on crossfire.
The candidates are DMP Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed, Railway Police chief Barrister Md Zillur Rahman, and SRB chief Additional IGP Md Ahsan Habib Palash, according to sources at the Home Ministry and the Prime Minister’s Office.
A final decision may come after Prime Minister Tarique Rahman returns from Japan on Thursday (October 29), the sources said.
The controversy erupted after the IGP said on October 26 that police would not hesitate to conduct crossfire operations if authorised by the government.
His remarks drew widespread criticism, prompting calls for his removal. The police headquarters later said he had used the term metaphorically to mean strict law enforcement.
