Court orders seizure of CRI tax records in case against Joy, Putul

A Dhaka court on Wednesday ordered the seizure of tax records of the Centre for Research and Information (CRI) in a corruption case against eight people, including Sajeeb Wazed Joy and Saima Wazed Putul, son and daughter of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Shahjahan Kabir passed the order following an application by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The other accused include CRI trustee Radwan Mujib Siddiq, former state minister Nasrul Hamid Bipu, CRI Executive Director Sabbir Bin Shams, former National Board of Revenue chairman Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, former finance minister A H M Mustafa Kamal and tax appeals member Rowshan Ara Akter.

According to the ACC, CRI received Tk 45.35 crore from 23 companies and declared income of Tk 100.31 crore between the 2013–14 and 2023–24 tax years. The commission alleges that Tk 15.68 crore was misappropriated.

The ACC application also stated that 25 CRI bank accounts recorded deposits exceeding Tk 247.85 crore and withdrawals of more than Tk 191.21 crore. The organisation is also accused of evading Tk 36.52 lakh in income tax and unlawfully obtaining tax benefits.

The case involves allegations of corruption, misappropriation of funds and money laundering. The court ordered the seizure of CRI's relevant tax records up to the 2025–26 tax year to facilitate the investigation.
