A cargo vessel, carrying 1,200 tonnes of coal, sank in the Pashur River near Mongla Port after colliding with an oil tanker late Monday night. All nine crew members were rescued, and no casualties were reported.

The accident occurred near Sundari Kotha in the Pashur Channel in the early hours of Tuesday, according to information provided by the vessel's crew.

The sunken vessel, MV Phulbari, was carrying coal from the foreign commercial ship MV Yas Jupiter, anchored at Hiron Point in Mongla Port, when it collided with the oil tanker MT Jannatul Ferdous while heading towards Mongla.

The cargo vessel, owned by IRS International, was carrying 1,200 metric tonnes of coal destined for Badamtali in Dhaka.

Following the collision, the nine crew members swam to safety and took shelter aboard a nearby cargo vessel.

Mongla Port authorities said the sunken vessel was outside the main navigational channel, so shipping movements had not been disrupted. Vessel traffic through the channel remained normal.

Commodore Md Shafiqul Islam Sarker, member (Harbour and Marine) of the Mongla Port Authority, said the Pashur Channel remained safe for navigation.

He added that the vessel's owners were taking prompt steps to arrange its recovery.
