The 26th month-long Kathin Chibar Dan (robe-offering) festival of the Buddhist community commenced at the Assambasti Buddhankur Buddhist Vihara in Rangamati town on Monday (October 26) afternoon with religious rituals, prayers, and the formal offering of robes to Buddhist monks.

Organized jointly by the Assambasti Buddhankur Buddhist Vihara and the Rangamati Barua Welfare Association, the opening ceremony was attended by Rangamati Hill District Council Chairman Dipan Talukder Dipu as the chief guest.

The religious gathering was presided over by Venerable Dharmakirti Mahathero, Vice-Principal of Sangharam Buddhist Vihara. District BNP Organizational Secretary Md Saiful Islam Shakil, District Jubo Dal General Secretary Md Abu Sadat Md Sayem, Buddhankur Buddhist Vihara Executive Committee President Sukumar Barua, and General Secretary Sanad Kanti Barua were present alongside monks from various monasteries.

Venerable Dharmapal Mahathero, Principal of Sinhala Buddhist Vihara, and Venerable Ananda Priya Bhikkhu, Principal of Swadharma Buddhist Vihara, delivered the main religious sermons.

Hundreds of Buddhist devotees participated in the congregation, taking the Five Precepts (Pancha Sila) before offering robes (Chibar) to the sangha of monks. The ceremony concluded with prayers for universal peace, non-violence, and harmony across the region.

The daylong events began at dawn with the recitation of Holy Scriptures, floral offerings, breakfast for the monks, the hoisting of national and religious flags, and alms-offering (Pindadana). The afternoon proceedings included opening songs, the main robe-offering rituals, religious discourses by senior monks, and the releasing of sky lanterns in the evening.

Kathin Chibar Dan follows the conclusion of the three-month rain retreat (Vassa) marked by Probarona Purnima, serving as a significant religious occasion for Buddhists to provide robes to monks and dedicate themselves to the teachings of Gautama Buddha.
