More than 50 houses were allegedly attacked, vandalised, looted and set on fire following the killing of a man in Kalkini upazila of Madaripur, with attackers also detonating several crude bombs on Monday.
The incidents took place in Kalinagar and Tumchar areas under Alinagar Union on Monday morning, October 26.
According to local sources and police, a long-standing dispute over local dominance led to the killing of Taizul Sardar on the morning of October 22. Tensions between the two rival groups had remained high since the incident.
Against this backdrop, members of the rival group allegedly armed themselves with locally made weapons and attacked several houses, including that of former union parishad chairman Milan Sardar, in Kalinagar and Tumchar.
Witnesses said the attackers detonated several crude bombs to spread panic in the area. They allegedly vandalised and looted more than 50 houses before setting them on fire, causing the flames to spread rapidly.
Fire service personnel and police rushed to the scene after receiving the news and brought the situation under control.
Madaripur Additional Superintendent of Police Jahangir Alam said police reached the scene and brought the situation under control. Initial information suggested that the attacks were linked to the killing of Taizul Sardar, he added.
He further said the superintendent of police had visited the scene and legal action would be taken over the incident.
