A passenger was allegedly beaten and robbed of cash, a mobile phone and a wristwatch on the roof of a moving train in Sirajganj on Monday, with one of the two alleged robbers detained.

The incident occurred around 10:45am aboard the Dhaka-to-Chilahati-bound Nilsagar Express. The second suspect fled.

The detainee was identified as Shamsul Haque, 23, from South Kalapara in Badal Rail Line area of Narayanganj. The identity of the other suspect was not immediately known.

The victim, Tanvir Ahmed, 18, is a resident of Birampur in Dinajpur and the son of Abu Bakkar Siddique.

According to the victim, he boarded the train in Dhaka to return home after sitting for a government job recruitment examination. He got off at a station before the Jamuna Railway Bridge to buy something. Unable to re-enter the crowded train, he climbed onto its roof.

While the train was crossing the Jamuna Railway Bridge, two men allegedly assaulted him, striking him on the head and other parts of his body, before taking Tk 2,900, a wristwatch and a smartphone.

Tanvir said he pleaded with the men to return his phone and Tk 100, explaining that the device contained important documents related to his job application. He offered to let them keep the remaining belongings. They returned Tk 100 but took the phone and other valuables.

When the train stopped at Jamtoil Railway Station, he raised an alarm. Passengers and people at the station rushed to help and detained one suspect, while the other escaped.

Kamarkhand Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Hashmat Ali said his police station initially took the detainee into custody before handing him over to railway police.

Sirajganj Bazar Railway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Khairul Islam Talukder said railway police took custody of the suspect from Kamarkhand police. The victim's mobile phone was recovered, but the other suspect escaped with Tk 2,700, he added.

On the night of October 17, a video showing a robbery aboard a moving train at Jamtoil Railway Station went viral on social media. Local residents subsequently called for regular deployment of railway police and an adequate number of Ansar members at the station to ensure passenger safety.

Meanwhile, Sirajganj Superintendent of Police Saiful Islam Santu conducted night patrols on two occasions to prevent robberies. Railway police and Kamarkhand police are also working to identify and apprehend those involved in such incidents.
