Document checks and investigations into 1,413 plots in the capital, allotted on political grounds between 2009 and 2024, have been stepped up, and work on 1,074 of them has been suspended.

Strict legal action will be taken if specific probes find irregularities in the allotments.

Rajuk (Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha) has already suspended work on 874 plots in the Purbachal New Town project and 200 in Jhilmil residential area. It found initial proof of irregularities.

The information and decisions were presented at the second meeting of the parliamentary standing committee on the Ministry of Housing and Public Works. It was held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Sunday (October 25). Committee chairman Md Rezaul Karim Badsha presided.

The parliament secretariat said 1,413 plots were allotted on political grounds in Gulshan, Banani, Uttara, Purbachal and Jhilmil between 2009 and 2024. Purbachal had the most, with 944 plots.

A committee formed under a High Court rule examined the documents. It looked into whether Rajuk made any irregular or unlawful allotments. It sent a report to the ministry.

Based on the report, work on all of the 874 plots in Purbachal and 200 in Jhilmil has been suspended. The political consideration and irregularities will be examined through a fair investigation. Final legal steps will then be taken on the plots.

The meeting also disclosed key details about the new secretariat at Agargaon in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. The ministry told the committee that preparations are under way to lay the foundation stone of the new secretariat on Victory Day, December 16.

The meeting also reviewed progress on rebuilding the main structure of the graves of former president Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia. It also reviewed the unfinished beautification of the grounds. Rajuk and the Public Works Department said several steps have been taken to finish the main work quickly. They hope to complete everything by December.

A major initiative to use rooftops of government buildings for green power also came up. The Development Project Proposal (DPP) of the project, “Enhancing Clean Energy Access through Rooftop Solar PV in Public Infrastructure”, has been sent to the Planning Commission for approval.

Solar panels under the project can produce 360 megawatts of electricity. After meeting the buildings’ own needs, surplus power will be supplied directly to the national grid.

The meeting also heard details of works completed in 2026 by the Public Works Department at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. The chairman and members directed those concerned to work with the highest responsibility to keep the parliament building well maintained and clean, and to preserve its dignity.

At the start of the meeting, the minutes of the first meeting were confirmed. Progress on implementing the decisions taken was also presented in detail.

Committee members and Housing and Public Works State Minister Ahmed Sohel Manjur, Md Lutfuzzaman Babar, Sheikh Mojibur Rahman Iqbal, M Manjurul Karim Roni, Md Ruhul Amin and Md Tajuddin Khan were present. The secretaries of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works and the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat, and heads of related offices and agencies, also attended.
