Farooqui Murder Case Hearing Deferred to Nov 8

A Dhaka court has postponed the hearing on framing charges in the murder and robbery case involving television presenter Maulana Nurul Islam Farooqui until November 8.

The hearing was scheduled for Sunday (October 25) before the court of Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge-9 Shahidul Islam. However, the hearing was deferred as accused Hadisur Rahman Sagar, who is in jail, was not produced before the court.

Bail-granted accused Abdullah Al Tasnim Nahid, Engineer alias Riaz alias Ripon, and Abu Raihan Mahmud Abdul Hadi appeared before the court.

Two other accused, Mahmud Ibn Bashar and Rafiqul Islam Fardin, remain absconding, with arrest warrants issued against them.

On August 27, 2014, miscreants hacked and slit the throat of Farooqui at his residence in the capital’s East Rajabazar. His son, Faisal Farooqui, subsequently filed a murder case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.

According to the case statement, a group of assailants entered the house in the evening, tied up the occupants and killed Farooqui. They also allegedly looted cash, mobile phones, gold ornaments and a camera.

Nearly a decade later, on November 5, 2024, CID Additional Superintendent of Police K. M. Abul Kashem, the investigation officer, submitted a charge sheet against six people. The investigation uncovered allegations of robbery alongside the murder.
