The government has appointed BNP leader Shahadat Hossain, who took office as Mayor of Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) following a court verdict, as the full-time administrator of the same corporation.
The appointment was confirmed through a notification issued by the Local Government Division on Sunday (October 25), signed by Deputy Secretary Jewel Rana.
According to the notification, Shahadat Hossain will serve as administrator until further notice under Section 4 of the Local Government (City Corporation) (Amendment) Act, 2026. He will receive a monthly honorarium and allowances as per rules. The order, issued in public interest, takes immediate effect.
The appointment comes amid discussions regarding the expiry of the elected council's tenure and the duration of Shahadat's mayoral mandate. According to Local Government Division records, the five-year term of the CCC council elected in 2021 expired on February 22. While Shahadat claimed his tenure extends until November 2029 under the court ruling, local government documents noted the court declared him mayor without specifying a separate tenure timeline.
Shahadat contested the CCC mayoral election held on January 27, 2021, where Awami League candidate Rezaul Karim Chowdhury was declared the winner. Shahadat filed a suit with the electoral tribunal on February 24, 2021, alleging voting irregularities.
Following the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024, Rezaul Karim was removed from office on August 19, 2024, and Chattogram Divisional Commissioner Md Tofael Islam was appointed interim administrator.
On October 1, 2024, the Chattogram Electoral Tribunal declared Shahadat the elected mayor, revoking the 2021 result. The Election Commission issued a gazette on October 8, 2024, and Shahadat was sworn in as mayor on November 3, 2024—nearly three years and nine months after the election.
