A depression over the Bay of Bengal could intensify into a deep depression and subsequently develop into a very severe cyclonic storm, potentially crossing India’s Andhra Pradesh coast around October 28, said the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) on Sunday.

In a special weather bulletin issued on October 25, the department said the depression over the east-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal had moved southeastward and was positioned at 15.2 degrees north latitude and 91.0 degrees east longitude.

At 6am on Sunday, the system was located approximately 785 kilometres south of Chattogram port, 700 kilometres south of Cox’s Bazar port, 820 kilometres south of Mongla port and 760 kilometres south of Payra port.

According to the BMD, the depression could move southward and intensify into a deep depression over the east-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal on Sunday.

It may then gradually change direction and move west-northwestward, potentially developing into a very severe cyclonic storm before crossing the Andhra Pradesh coast of India around October 28.

However, the projected track and intensity may change as the system develops.

The BMD said sustained wind speeds near the centre of the depression were reaching 40 kilometres per hour, with gusts of up to 50kph.

The sea remained rough in areas near the system’s centre.

The department has advised the maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra to maintain Local Cautionary Signal No. 1.

Fishing boats and trawlers operating in the northern Bay of Bengal have been advised to move closer to the coast and navigate with caution until further notice.

The authorities are monitoring the system as it moves across the Bay of Bengal and potentially strengthens over the coming days.

While the current forecast points to a possible landfall along India’s Andhra Pradesh coast around October 28, the system’s eventual intensity and precise path will depend on its further development.
