A doctor at the Magura 250-Bed District Hospital has been relieved of his duties on charges of negligence after failing to initially determine the cause of death of a local Jubo Dal leader, officials said on Friday.

The doctor, Khandakar Mainul Hasan, attached to the emergency department, was temporarily withdrawn from all hospital activities by the authorities.

Hospital Superintendent Mohsin Uddin Fakir confirmed the matter, adding that a probe committee would be formed to investigate the incident.

According to hospital and family sources, Shaker Hossain, 39, senior joint convener of Magura Pourashava Jubo Dal, was rescued in a bloodstained condition from the Magura Central Bus Terminal around 5:30 am on Wednesday (October 21).

When taken to the hospital, Dr. Mainul Hasan initially declared him dead due to cardiac arrest.

The victim's family subsequently took the body home for burial. However, while preparing for the funeral bath, relatives discovered a hole at the back of his head and notified the police. The body was then brought back to the hospital for an autopsy.

Following the autopsy, emergency department physician Dr. Krishna Das Biswas revealed that a bullet was retrieved from inside the victim's skull, establishing that he had been shot to death.

The initial misdiagnosis raised serious questions over professional competence and prompted the victim's family to lodge a complaint of negligence against Dr. Mainul, leading to his temporary removal.
