The Home Ministry has taken an initiative to purchase 5,830 vehicles worth Tk 6,608.14 crore for Bangladesh Police to resolve vehicle shortages, improve emergency services, and strengthen law enforcement across the country.

Two separate project proposals have been placed before the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) for consideration and approval, state-run news agency BSS reported on Thursday (October 22).

ECNEC Chairperson and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will preside over the upcoming ECNEC meeting scheduled for October 25 at the Secretariat.

Out of the total proposed investment, Tk 4,328 crore has been allocated to purchase 4,829 general operational vehicles, while Tk 2,280.14 crore has been proposed for 1,001 specialized vehicles. Fully funded by the government, the implementation period for both projects is set from October 2026 to June 2029.

According to the project proposals, 639 administrative police stations currently serve an area of nearly 147,000 square kilometers with only 1,237 vehicles. This averages fewer than two vehicles per police station, and nearly 64 per cent of existing vehicles are over 10 years old. As a result, police face challenges during regular patrols, emergency responses, and rapid force deployment. The proposed investment aims to boost police mobility, control crime, and ensure internal security.

Under the specialized vehicle project, riot control vehicles, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), mobile command centers, and crime scene vans will be purchased to assist in crowd management, operations in remote areas, and evidence collection.

Plans also include procuring speedboats and motorized boats to guard vast waterways, secure key performance indicator (KPI) areas, conduct anti-terror operations, and carry out rescue efforts.

According to the fiscal year spending plan, Tk 2,080.94 crore will be spent in FY 2026-27, Tk 2,867.55 crore in FY 2027-28, and Tk 1,660.58 crore in FY 2028-29.

Besides vehicle procurement, both projects include training programs for drivers and mechanics. A total of 1,000 members will be trained under the operational project and 960 under the specialized project, alongside an allocation of Tk 1.5 crore for vehicle repair tools.
