Police recovered the partially decomposed body of a young man from a locked room in a rented house in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur on Thursday.
The body was recovered from a ground-floor room of a two-storey house owned by Fazlul Haque in Faridpur village around noon on October 22. The incident came to light after the room had remained locked for several days and a foul smell began spreading through the house.
The deceased was identified as Ashik, son of Abdul Kadir of Khaurail village in Bhaluka upazila of Mymensingh. He lived in the rented house with his wife and child and worked as a tile worker.
House owner Fazlul Haque said, he had gone to his village home during the Durga Puja holidays. During his absence, he noticed that the tenant's room had remained locked for several days and assumed the family had gone to their village home for the holidays.
On Thursday morning, a foul smell began spreading through the house. As the smell intensified around noon, Haque looked for its source and spotted Ashik's body inside the room through a window. He then informed the police.
The deceased's father, Abdul Kadir said, '"Ashik was married and had a five-year-old son. He lived in the rented house with his wife and child while working as a tile worker."
He added that Ashik's wife had left for her parents' home with their child several days earlier following a family dispute. Kadir last spoke to his son five days ago and learned of his death on Thursday.
Sub-Inspector Ubaydul Haque of Sreepur Police Station said, "the body had been recovered and sent to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur for an autopsy."
Police are investigating to determine whether the death was a murder or suicide, he added.
