Himchhari tragedy: 4th body recovered

The body of another young man, who went missing while bathing in the sea at Himchhari in Cox’s Bazar during the Durga Puja holidays, was recovered on Thursday morning, taking the death toll in the incident to four.

The body of Harun was recovered from the Sea Nibash area of Himchhari on Thursday morning, said the rescuers.

Three other bodies were recovered from the beach near the museum adjacent to Himchhari Marina Resort on Wednesday evening. The deceased were identified as Al Mahibul Ibn Mokarram, also known as Rohan, Saiful Haque Jisan and Mohammad Akash.

According to the Fire Service, five workers from different factories in Chattogram had travelled to Cox’s Bazar for a holiday. Three of them went into the sea for a swim, but were swept away by strong currents.

As they struggled in the water, they sought help from a group of seven people who were some distance away. Three members of that group entered the sea in an attempt to rescue them but were also pulled under, the Fire Service said.

Lifeguards and local residents launched a search after receiving the news and recovered three bodies. One person was rescued and admitted to hospital, while search operations continued for the remaining missing person.

Meanwhile, the upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) said the group of seven rescuers had travelled from Dhaka to visit Cox’s Bazar.
