Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise is set to receive another major honour as the American Film Institute (AFI) has selected him for its 52nd Life Achievement Award.
The award, one of the film industry's most prestigious honours, will be presented at a grand ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on April 24 next year.
In a statement, AFI Board of Trustees Chair Kathleen Kennedy described Cruise as a global icon who has shown extraordinary dedication to his work as an actor and producer. She praised his strong belief in cinema and its power to bring people together.
Kennedy said Cruise's love for cinema had made him an outstanding ambassador for American filmmaking worldwide, adding that AFI was honoured to present him with the award.
Cruise began his acting career in 1981. His films have grossed more than $13.3 billion worldwide. Movies such as Risky Business, Top Gun, Minority Report, Interview with the Vampire, A Few Good Men, The Firm and the Mission: Impossible franchise have established him as an international star.
Although Cruise has received Oscar nominations, he had not won a competitive Academy Award. Last year, he received an honorary Oscar.
