Zahir Fakir, a Jubo Dal leader has been hacked to death by miscreants on his way home in Sonargaon, Narayanganj.
The incident took place at about 10:00PM on Wednesday (October 21) in Charkishoreganj area of the upazila. He was taken to Munshiganj General Hospital in critical condition, where he died.

The victim, Zahir Fakir, was the son of Mohammad Abdur Rahman of Kalapahariya area in Araihazar upazila. He was president of Kalapahariya Union Jubo Dal.

According to police and locals, Zahir was returning home after closing his pharmacy, as he did every day. On the way, a group of 15 to 20 people blocked his path and hacked him indiscriminately. They left him seriously wounded. Locals rescued him and took him to hospital, where he died during treatment.

Zahir's nephew Ismail Hossain alleged that his uncle had a dispute with Mubarak, a political leader of Kalapahariya area. He said Mubarak, who is being talked about as a possible candidate for chairman in the union parishad election, planned the killing. He demanded that those involved be identified, arrested and tried. Mubarak could not be reached for comment on the allegation.

Khorshed Alam, member secretary of Araihazar upazila Jubo Dal, said Zahir was a dedicated leader of Jubo Dal. His home was in Kalapahariya, but he lived in Munshiganj. Khorshed said Zahir often told him that someone would kill him. He said he could not confirm with whom Zahir had a dispute.

Mohammad Abdul Barik, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sonargaon Police Station, said Zahir had a pharmacy in Charkishoreganj area. His rivals attacked him with sharp weapons and seriously injured him on his way home after closing the shop. He died after being taken to hospital. Police are investigating the incident. Details can be given after the investigation, he said.
