The Jashore district BNP office has installed a two-kilowatt rooftop solar power system, becoming the first political party office in Bangladesh to introduce solar electricity.
State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit inaugurated the system on Wednesday.
He said the office would meet its own electricity needs and supply surplus power to the national grid through net metering.
Amit expressed hope that other political parties would follow the example. He also said the government planned to bring irrigation pumps, particularly in southwestern districts, under solar power to reduce dependence on diesel and grid electricity.
He added that rooftop solar systems could generate an additional 3,000–4,000 megawatts of electricity nationwide before next summer.
