Train services resumed in Nilphamari on Wednesday after local residents withdrew a four-hour railway blockade demanding stoppages at Darowani Railway Station.
More than 1,000 people took part in the blockade in the Darowani Textile area of Sadar upazila around 9:00 AM, disrupting train services on the Chilahati-Saidpur route.
The protesters said Darowani station was important for local residents and businesses, but the lack of regular train stoppages had made travel difficult and increased transportation costs for traders.
They said the presence of several industrial establishments, including Uttara EPZ, had made the demand for train stoppages at the station more pressing.
Residents of Sonaray, Charaikhola and Kundupukur unions have long been demanding that trains stop at Darowani station. On Wednesday morning, they first formed a human chain before blocking the railway tracks.
The Rocket Mail train from Chilahati was stranded near Darowani station, while the intercity Rupsha Express, bound for Khulna from Chilahati, was held at Nilphamari station. Passengers on the two trains and those waiting to board the Khulna-bound train at Saidpur, Parbatipur, Fulbari and Birampur stations suffered as a result.
Local resident Jahurul Islam said many people from nearby unions used Darowani station for travel, while traders relied on it to transport goods to different destinations.
He said the residents' main demand was to introduce train stoppages at the station to ease travel and support local businesses.
Following the blockade, Nilphamari Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mubashshira Amatullah, the officer-in-charge of Saidpur Railway Police Station and the station master of Nilphamari Railway Station visited the area.
They assured the protesters that the matter would be discussed with the railway authorities. The residents subsequently withdrew the blockade, allowing train services to return to normal after about four hours.
Mubashshira Amatullah said discussions would be held with the railway authorities to arrange stoppages for trains where possible.
Local residents are now awaiting a decision on their demand, hoping that the introduction of train stoppages at Darowani station will ease travel difficulties and benefit businesses in the area.
