Two people were killed and four others injured when a Chattogram-bound microbus lost control and crashed into an electricity pole in Barabkunda area of Sitakunda on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway on Wednesday (October 21).
The accident occurred in front of the electricity office near Anwara Jute Gate, according to local witnesses and highway police. The impact left the microbus severely mangled.
Locals rushed to the scene and joined the rescue operation before Baro Awlia Highway Police arrived and recovered the victims.
The deceased were identified as Rozi Akter, 60, and her daughter Nazma Khatun, 42. Rozi was reportedly a resident of Jamalganj in Joypurhat and the wife of late Najibur Rahman. Nazma was the wife of Aslam Hossain.
The four injured passengers were initially taken to Sitakunda Health Complex for treatment before being referred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, a physician at the health complex said.
Police removed the wrecked microbus from the highway and took it to the police station. Traffic on the Chattogram-bound lane slowed briefly but returned to normal following police intervention.
Police suspect the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel, but said the exact cause of the crash is under investigation.
