The BBC will close three linear broadcast services in spring 2027 as part of a major cost-cutting drive aimed at saving £500 million by 2028, Sky News reported on Tuesday (October 20).
The affected services are BBC Three, BBC Scotland and BBC Radio 4 Extra. The changes will end their current traditional broadcast formats, with much of their content moving to digital platforms.
BBC Three programmes will remain available on BBC iPlayer and other platforms, including YouTube. BBC Scotland content will continue on iPlayer and will also be shown on BBC One and BBC Two in Scotland. Radio 4 Extra programmes will remain accessible through BBC Sounds.
The broadcaster is facing mounting financial pressure as it adapts to changing audience habits and increasing demand for online content.
Separately, BBC News has proposed cutting more than 100 jobs as part of a savings plan expected to deliver around £5.5 million. Further cost-reduction measures are also under consideration.
The latest changes reflect the BBC’s wider strategy to reduce spending while shifting more of its services towards digital platforms.
