Bangladesh National University marked its 34th founding anniversary on Wednesday (October 21), highlighting its role in expanding higher education across the country through thousands of affiliated colleges and educational institutions.
Established on October 21, 1992, through a gazette notification following the passage of the National University Act in Parliament, the university was founded to widen access to higher education, ease pressure on existing universities and coordinate college education across the country, according to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS).
Currently, around 2,318 affiliated colleges and educational institutions operate under the university, serving nearly 4 million students and employing more than 100,000 teachers, according to a university press release.
The university oversees nearly 70 per cent of Bangladesh’s higher education and has produced more than 10 million graduates who are contributing to education, administration, business, technology and social development at home and abroad.
To mark the anniversary, the university arranged banners at its main campus and city office, published a special supplement and organised prayers at its central mosque.
The university said it was continuing efforts to modernise curricula, expand teacher training, reduce session backlogs and strengthen research opportunities to meet changing educational needs and the challenges of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
