UNICEF has warned that escalating fighting and fuel shortages in Yemen’s Taiz governorate threaten water supplies for 1.6 million children, with water systems serving three million people at risk.

Akhil Iyer, UNICEF’s representative in Yemen, said disruptions to key supply routes, including the Taiz-Aden corridor, had caused food and fuel shortages, while the cost of truck-delivered water had tripled.

Since fighting intensified in September, an estimated 120,000 people have been displaced to Taiz. UNICEF reported that more than 52,000 of the over 168,000 children screened in the governorate this year were suffering from acute malnutrition.

Diesel shortages threaten to disrupt water pumps, while the World Food Programme has warned that wheat flour stocks in affected areas are nearly exhausted.

UNICEF has urged all parties to protect civilians, water systems and healthcare facilities amid the worsening humanitarian crisis.
