A major Google Cloud outage disrupted banking apps, online services and businesses across parts of Europe, including the UK, on Tuesday after a power-related incident affected one of the company’s key data centre regions.
The disruption began at around 7am local time on October 20 in Google’s Europe-west2 region in London, according to the report.
Google attributed the incident to an unexpected power event, which affected several cloud services and platforms that rely on its infrastructure.
Digital bank Revolut was among the services affected, with users reporting difficulties accessing their accounts and completing transactions. Several financial institutions and online platforms also experienced disruptions.
Google’s engineering teams began working to resolve the issue shortly after it emerged. According to the company’s status page, recovery efforts progressed rapidly, with most affected workloads restored.
The incident has renewed concerns about the reliance of financial institutions and technology companies on cloud infrastructure, highlighting how a technical failure at a major service provider can disrupt a wide range of digital services.
