Leaders and activists of the banned Awami League and its affiliated organisations staged a procession carrying oars and sticks in Ishwarganj upazila of Mymensingh on Tuesday.
They demanded the withdrawal of cases filed against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, Awami League Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim and other party leaders and activists, cancellation of verdicts and the release of political prisoners.
The procession began at Bhuiyan Filling Station in Char Hossainpur village around noon and proceeded along the Mymensingh-Kishoreganj highway before ending in front of Bhuiyan Bari in the Hari area.
According to sources, the programme was organised under the direction of Mymensingh district Swechchhasebak League, with overall assistance from Masud Hasan Turn, organising secretary of Ishwarganj upazila Awami League.
Anwar Hossain Mondol, an organiser of Ishwarganj upazila Swechchhasebak League and a former student leader, led the procession.
Former upazila Jubo League member Jahangir Alam, Rakib Mondol and activists from different levels of the organisations also took part. Anwar Hossain addressed a brief gathering at the end of the procession.
Contacted over the matter, Ishwarganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Sajjad Roman said, fugitives sometimes circulate old videos to create confusion.
Police would verify whether a procession by the banned organisation had actually taken place and take necessary legal action accordingly, he added.
