The government is committed to ensuring equal rights and security for all citizens, regardless of religion or ethnicity, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam Rinku has said.
“We do not believe in the term ‘minority’. Everyone will live with equal rights. We are working towards a society free from all forms of discrimination,” she said.
She made the remarks as the chief guest after visiting the Raghuakandi Durga Puja mandap in Gatti Union of Saltha upazila in her electoral constituency in Faridpur around 10pm on Monday.

Referring to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's statement, Shama Obaed said, “Religion is an individual's choice, but everyone has the right to security.”
She said the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) had consistently supported religious harmony. This year, the government had granted a five-day public holiday for Durga Puja and increased allocations for the festival, she added.
Shama Obaed said people from different religious communities were celebrating Sharadiya Durga Puja in a peaceful atmosphere. To maintain security during the festivities, local BNP leaders and activists were coordinating with temple committees and keeping vigil throughout the night to prevent any untoward incidents.
She stressed the need to further strengthen the bonds of religious harmony across the country.
Speaking about public service, the state minister said her priority was to work honestly for people's welfare and development.
“I have no personal expectations or demands. My fulfilment lies in working honestly for the development of the people. My father also stood beside people in their times of need, and I will always remain by your side.''
