National Citizens' Party (NCP) leader and Cumilla-4 (Debidwar) Member of Parliament Hasnat Abdullah has criticized the government's approach of merely forcing resignations for criminal offences, describing it as a "short-time paracetamol therapy."
Speaking to journalists after inspecting a Durga Puja mandap in theilahabad union of Debidwar upazila on Monday night (October 19), Hasnat asserted that resignation cannot serve as adequate punishment for wrongdoing.
"When an MP faces allegations of vandalizing a hospital, forcing them to resign is not enough. If a crime is committed, a proper investigation must be conducted, and the individual must be brought under the law to ensure justice," he said.
Expressing deep concern over the country's overall security situation, the NCP leader questioned how bad things must get for a state minister to take up arms and take to the streets himself.
Pointing out that law enforcement agencies and the Department of Narcotics Control are mandated to control narcotics, Hasnat noted that a state minister having to take up arms indicates a glaring failure within the Ministry of Home Affairs.
"If the police and the narcotics control department had performed their duties properly, brother Ishraque would not have had to take to the streets. Instead, the failure of the Home Ministry is being shifted onto brother Ishraque," he stated.
Launching a scathing attack on the Home Minister, Hasnat alleged that the incumbent minister, convicted in corruption, bribery, and land-grabbing cases, has completely failed to discharge his duties. He demanded accountability from the Home Minister, asking why a state minister was forced to take matters into his own hands.
Highlighting the vulnerability of ordinary citizens, Hasnat remarked, "I don't have a gun, you don't have a gun, and ordinary citizens don't have guns either. So what are they supposed to carry when taking to the streets?"
He added that if an ordinary citizen had taken up arms in a similar situation, they would have been arrested and prosecuted as criminals. Holding the Home Minister responsible for the circumstances that compelled a state minister to brandish a weapon, Hasnat demanded the Home Minister's resignation..
Referring to photos circulating on social media regarding the incident, Hasnat claimed that an unlicensed individual named Pavel was seen standing behind the state minister holding a firearm. He demanded a fair investigation and strict legal action against that individual as well.
