The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has set December 8 for the final hearing in the high-profile murder case of Biswajit Das, a tailor who was hacked to death in Old Dhaka in 2012.
The apex court fixed the date on Monday.
Earlier, the state had filed an application with the Appellate Division seeking an expedited hearing in the case. Attorney General Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal later confirmed that the application had been submitted to the relevant section of the court.
In its verdict on August 6, 2017, the High Court upheld the death sentences of two of the eight Bangladesh Chhatra League activists who had been sentenced to death by a trial court. The court acquitted six others of the death penalty, commuting the sentences of four of them to life imprisonment.
The two death sentences upheld were those of Rafiqul Islam Shakil and Rajon Talukder.
Saiful Islam and Kaiyum Mia Tipu were acquitted of the death penalty. Meanwhile, the death sentences of Mahfuzur Rahman Nahid, Emdadul Haque Emdad, GM Rasheduzzaman Shawon and Mir Mohammad Nur Alam Limon were commuted to life imprisonment.
The High Court also acquitted AHM Kibria and Golam Mostafa, who had been sentenced to life imprisonment by the trial court.
The life sentences of 11 other convicts were upheld as they did not appeal against the trial court's verdict. They are Khandaker Yunus Ali, Tarek Bin Johor, Alauddin, Obaidul Kader, Imran Hossain, Azizur Rahman, Al Amin Sheikh, Rafiqul Islam, Monirul Haque Pavel, Kamrul Hasan and Mosharraf Hossain.
Biswajit Das was hacked and beaten to death in front of Victoria Park in Old Dhaka on December 9, 2012, during an opposition-called blockade programme organised by the then 18-party alliance.
On March 5, 2013, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Detective Branch (DB) submitted a charge sheet against 21 Bangladesh Chhatra League activists in connection with the killing.
The Bangladesh Chhatra League was the student wing of the then ruling Awami League, whose activities are currently banned.
