At least four people have been killed and dozens seriously injured in a major fire at a Canadian military base.
Prime Minister Mark Carney described the incident as one of the worst peacetime tragedies on Canadian soil in the history of the country's armed forces.
The fire broke out at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright at around 4pm local time on Saturday. Authorities have so far confirmed little about the cause of the blaze.
Local media reports suggested that the fire may have started after a gas main was struck during a live-fire exercise at the base.
Carney said military and civilian firefighters had risked their lives battling the blaze throughout the night to protect their fellow Canadians.
The Municipal District of Wainwright said on social media that strong winds had caused the fire to spread rapidly.
Canada's Department of National Defence said the cause of the fire was under investigation, adding that there was no indication at this stage that it was linked to terrorism.
Carney confirmed the deaths of four military personnel and said dozens of others had been seriously injured. Their names have not been released, but their families have been notified.
Before the prime minister's address, Canadian media reported seven deaths, citing unnamed military sources. Carney did not indicate whether the government expected the death toll to rise.
Located in rural Alberta, Canadian Forces Base Wainwright is one of the Canadian Army's busiest training facilities. Its airfield is also used by the Royal Canadian Air Force. More than 1,000 people may be present at the base at any given time.
