14 remanded for ‘Joy Bangla’ rally in Gulshan

A Dhaka court on Saturday remanded 14 people, including former Bauphal municipality mayor Ziaul Haque Jewel, for three days in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act over a ‘Joy Bangla’ slogan-led rally in Gulshan.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon Hossain passed the order after police sought seven days remand for the accused. Prosecuting department Sub-Inspector Moktar Hossain confirmed the order.

According to the case statement, several hundred people joined the rally in Gulshan-1 on September 11. When police attempted to disperse them, two crude bombs were allegedly exploded, prompting police to fire two rounds of rubber bullets to bring the situation under control.

Sub-Inspector Md Mahbub Hossain of Gulshan Police Station filed the case under the Anti-Terrorism Act on the same day, naming 118 people and accusing another 80 to 100 unidentified individuals.
