All scheduled banks across Bangladesh will remain open today as the government has cancelled the holiday on October 17 to adjust the holidays for Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of the Hindu community.
Accordingly, all government, semi-government, autonomous, semi-autonomous and private offices, along with all scheduled banks, will remain open today before the festival holidays.
According to a Bangladesh Bank circular, banking activities will remain suspended for three consecutive days from October 20 to 22 for Durga Puja. As October 23 and 24 fall on Friday and Saturday, respectively, banking operations will remain closed for five consecutive days.
To compensate for the extended holiday, banks have been instructed to operate today, Saturday, as on a regular working day.
Trading at the country’s two stock exchange-the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) - will also remain suspended during the Puja holidays, as stock market transactions are closely linked to banking operations.
However, limited banking services will remain available in port and customs areas during the holidays to facilitate import and export activities.
According to Bangladesh Bank’s directives, bank branches and booths in seaports, land ports and airports must maintain necessary services. Relevant banks have been instructed to take the required measures in consultation with local administrations and port and customs authorities.
