US President Donald Trump has fired White House Press Secretary Katie Zakaria, according to several presidential advisers who confirmed the development to CNN.
The dismissal brings an end to Zakaria’s brief tenure as the White House’s chief spokesperson. She faced controversy and questions less than a week after taking office.
Trump suggested that Zakaria reconsider her position while speaking to reporters on Friday morning, October 16, local time. “Honestly, if I were you, I would reconsider it,” he said.
Trump said he would speak with Zakaria after returning to the White House from a trip to Georgia. He also indicated that the final decision would be left to her. However, the US president ultimately decided to fire her.
Referring to their conversation, Trump said, “Katie, do you really need this job? I don’t think you need it.”
Controversy surrounding Zakaria began shortly after she took office. Questions arose over her first appearance in the White House briefing room on Tuesday and her experience in the legal profession, putting the Trump administration under pressure.
According to CNN, Zakaria’s dismissal has brought her short-lived tenure as the White House’s chief spokesperson to an end.
