FIFA has fined the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) $20,000 and ordered it to close 15 per cent of stadium seats for Spain's next international match following discriminatory chants during a friendly against Egypt.
The match ended in a goalless draw at the RCDE Stadium in Cornellà on March 31. During the game, a section of spectators chanted, “If you don't jump, you're Muslim.” Boos were also heard during Egypt's national anthem before kick-off.
FIFA launched a disciplinary investigation after the incidents were mentioned in the referee's report.
Under the sanctions, the federation must pay the fine and ensure that 15 per cent of the stadium's capacity remains closed for Spain's next international fixture.
Spain are scheduled to face England at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid on November 15.
Anti-discrimination messages were displayed on the stadium's big screens and broadcast over the public address system during the match. Despite efforts to discourage the behaviour, the chants reportedly resumed at different points during the game.
Catalonia's police force, the Mossos d'Esquadra, and the public prosecutor's office responsible for hate crimes have also launched investigations into the incident.
The controversy drew particular attention because Spanish Muslim footballer Lamine Yamal was playing in the match. He publicly condemned the chants after the game.
The Spanish Football Federation, national team coach Luis de la Fuente and several Spanish institutions also criticised the incident.
