Students of Jagannath University (JnU) slaughtered a cow beside the Vice-Chancellor’s residence in protest against a notice issued by the university administration banning the slaughter of animals on campus.
The event was organised on Friday morning (October 16) as part of a previously announced programme titled “Friday’s Beef Feast.”
The cow was slaughtered on the road between the Vice-Chancellor’s residence and the Department of Mathematics around 8:00 AM. Students had purchased the cow for Tk 1.25 lakh on Thursday for the event.
On Wednesday (October 14), the university’s Proctor’s Office issued a notice prohibiting the slaughter of animals of any kind on campus in the interest of maintaining cleanliness, public health and discipline.
The notice also stated that disciplinary measures would be taken against those violating the directive in accordance with the regulations of Dhaka South City Corporation.
The notice sparked discontent among students. In response, Jagannath University Central Students’ Union (JAKSU) Assistant General Secretary (AGS) Masud Rana announced the “Beef Feast” programme. A participation fee of Tk 70 per person was set, and students were allowed to register through a Google Form on Thursday.
Earlier, at around 9:30 PM on Wednesday, students staged a protest procession and rally at the university’s sculpture square in protest against the notice. The programme, organised under the leadership of JAKSU, put forward four demands.
The demands included the withdrawal of the notice banning animal slaughter, a public apology over its issuance, an investigation into the reasons behind attempts to give the dinner programme a communal dimension, the inclusion of beef and mutton on the university cafeteria menu, and the maintenance of religious harmony across the campus.
Asked about the matter, JnU Additional Proctor Professor Dr Md Azam Khan said, "the authorities would have no objection to the beef feast if it were organised in an orderly manner, following specific rules and with administrative permission."
