Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Md Abdus Salam said initiatives will be taken to import dengue vaccines, expressing hope that funding will not be an issue.

He made the remarks as chief guest at a mock parliamentary debate organized by Debate for Democracy on dengue prevention at the Film Development Corporation (FDC) on Friday (October 16).

Abdus Salam said the government is giving top priority to dengue treatment. He added that a proposal will be made to distribute funds collected from dengue prevention fines among the families of deceased poor citizens.

The administrator noted that the Prime Minister issued instructions prioritizing dengue prevention and treatment, increasing accountability for all. However, he emphasized that public awareness is essential alongside government efforts to curb the outbreak.

Chairing the event, Debate for Democracy Chairman Hasan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiron said dengue has become a year-round concern, causing hardship for low- and middle-income families facing hospital expenses and bed shortages. He urged the government to consider importing scientifically proven dengue vaccines.

Kiron highlighted past irregularities in mosquito control, including fake saline crises and overcharging for dengue tests. He noted that 1,705 people died of dengue in 2023 under the previous regime, marking the highest toll in the country's history.

Kobi Nazrul Government College won the debate competition, titled 'Public awareness is more important than government initiatives in preventing dengue,' defeating the opposition team.

Prof Abu Mohammad Rois, along with journalists Md Atiqur Rahman, Prateek Ejaz, Md Mehdi Hasan, and Zenia Kabir Suchona, served as judges for the event.
