Authorities have announced the indefinite closure of five garment factories in Uttara, Dhaka, citing workers’ strikes and alleged unrest at the workplaces.

The factories are Versatile Fashions (Pvt) Ltd, Umbrella Ltd, Nice Apparels Industries Ltd, Dazzling Dresses Ltd and Olio Apparels Ltd.

In notices issued on Thursday (October 15), the authorities said operations in all departments except security would remain suspended under Section 13(1) of the Bangladesh Labour Act, 2006, until further notice.

According to the notices, some workers staged strikes from October 12 to 14 over various demands, reporting to work but refusing to perform their duties. The management alleged that the workers ignored requests to resume work and created a tense and intimidating situation.

The notices said the situation raised concerns over the safety of officials and employees and the security of factory property, making normal operations impossible.

The authorities said the reopening dates and times would be announced later through further notices.
