A 22-year-old man died after being struck with a wooden batten during a dispute with his friend in Alamdanga upazila of Chuadanga, with police arresting the accused in a murder case filed by the victim's father.
The incident occurred at around 10:00PM on Wednesday (October 14), near Gobindapur New Bus Stand.
The deceased, Imdadul Haque, was the son of Rezaul Karim of Nowdabonbil village under Alamdanga municipality. The accused, Nais Khondaker, 25, is the son of the late Majnu Khondaker and lives in the same area.
According to local sources, the two friends were sitting at a tea stall when an argument broke out over various issues. Angered by Nais's behaviour, Imdadul decided to complain to his friend's mother.
Imdadul went to Nais's house and raised the issue with her. The two men argued again, and the situation escalated.
Nais allegedly chased Imdadul with a wooden batten and struck him on the head after he fell inside the house while trying to flee. Imdadul suffered serious injuries to his head and other parts of his body.
When Imdadul did not return for a long time, his relatives went looking for him. They found him lying in a blood-soaked condition beside a partition wall between a tube-well and a room inside the house.
His relatives took him to Fatema Clinic in Alamdanga for initial treatment before heading to Kushtia Medical College Hospital by ambulance. However, he died on the way near Khajangor.
Nais's mother gave a different account of the incident. She said Imdadul came to their house to complain about her son, leading to an argument. She alleged that Imdadul struck Nais with a stick and tried to flee. Nais then hit him on the head with the wooden batten after he fell.
After the incident, Nais reportedly left home and went to the Lal Bridge area. Local youths tried to detain him, and he was caught and beaten after attempting to flee towards a nearby mass grave site. Residents later handed him over to Alamdanga police.
Locals said Imdadul had been trying to go abroad and had returned home on Tuesday after a planned flight did not take place. They also described Nais as unemployed and short-tempered.
Imdadul's father filed a murder case with Alamdanga Police Station, naming Nais as the sole accused.
Investigation officer SI Shital Biswas said the dispute began with joking and verbal exchanges before Nais allegedly struck Imdadul several times with the wooden batten. Police have arrested the accused and are preparing to produce him before a court.
The body was sent to the district hospital for an autopsy after an inquest was conducted, the officer added.
