A Dhaka court on Thursday sentenced Syed Sohanur Rahman Siam, a leader of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League, to four years of rigorous imprisonment in a case involving the acquisition of assets beyond his known sources of income.
The court of Divisional Special Judge BM Tariqul Kabir also fined him Tk 20,000, with an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment in default of payment, said Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) prosecutor Delwar Jahan Rumi.
The court concluded the recording of testimony on September 13 after examining all 11 witnesses. During his defence hearing on September 24, Siam pleaded not guilty and sought justice.
The ACC filed the case against Siam on January 5 last year, alleging that he had acquired Tk 3.73 million in illegal assets between September 3, 2021 and June 30, 2024.
Following an investigation, ACC Assistant Director Zakir Hossain submitted the charge sheet on December 30, alleging that Siam possessed Tk 3.181 million in movable and immovable assets inconsistent with his known sources of income.
The court formally framed charges against him on June 17 and ordered the trial to begin.
