Five of the world's leading companies have been engaged in container management at Chattogram Port as part of efforts to modernise the country's maritime sector, said Shipping Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam on Thursday.
He made the statement while speaking at the Bangladesh International Maritime and Offshore Expo (BIMOX) at a convention centre in the capital.
The minister said modernisation work was underway at Chattogram Port, while Payra Deep Sea Port and Matarbari Port were also expected to become operational soon.
Bangladesh has around 16,000 kilometres of inland waterways, but much of the network remains underutilised, he said, highlighting the need to make better use of the country's extensive river transport system.
Sheikh Rabiul Alam also stressed the importance of adopting modern technology for deep-sea fishing and offshore oil and gas exploration.
The government wants to accelerate progress in these sectors through modernisation, improved infrastructure and greater use of advanced technologies, he added.
