Bangladesh leg-spinner Rishad Hossain has been retained by Hobart Hurricanes for the 16th season of the Big Bash League (BBL) after finishing as the team's leading wicket-taker last season.

The franchise confirmed the signing in a post on its official website. Rishad took 15 wickets in 12 matches in his debut BBL season, averaging 20.86 at an economy rate of 7.82. His best bowling figures were three for 26.

His performances earned him the Hurricanes' BBL Player of the Year award.

Rishad's desire to return to Hobart played an important role in the decision, said Salliann Beams, the franchise's general manager of high performance.

"Rishad made it clear to us that he had a great time in Hobart last season and wanted to return. That meant a lot to us," Beams said.

She added that the signing of Adam Zampa had changed the team's composition, but the franchise wanted to explore every option to bring Rishad back because of his strong desire to play for the Hurricanes again.

Praising the Bangladesh spinner's performance, Beams said Rishad had been outstanding in his first BBL season. Playing every match and finishing as the team's leading wicket-taker demonstrated his ability and adaptability to Australian conditions, she added.

Beams also said having Rishad and Zampa together would give the Hurricanes greater flexibility in their bowling plans.

The two leg-spinners offer different strengths, allowing the team to adjust its attack according to pitch conditions and match situations. Rishad had proved particularly effective during the middle overs last summer, she said.

The 16th edition of the Big Bash League is scheduled to begin on December 12.
