A massive cargo ship carrying over 2,500 containers sank in the southern part of the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday morning following a naval mine explosion and a subsequent fire, confirmed the naval wing of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
According to a statement issued by the public relations department of the IRGC Navy, the vessel was attempting to navigate an unauthorized and high-risk route in the Strait of Hormuz when it struck a naval mine. The impact triggered a powerful explosion, causing a severe fire that quickly engulfed the ship before it sank into the sea.
Following the sinking, numerous containers were left floating in the surrounding waters.
The IRGC Navy issued a navigation warning instructing local vessels and fishermen to navigate the area with extreme caution to prevent further collisions with the floating debris and containers.
