Workers of Sea Stage (BD) Limited in Sreepur, Gazipur, staged a road blockade after the factory failed to pay their wages for September on the scheduled date.
They blocked the MC Bazar-Shishu Palli regional road at Union Mor around 11:30 AM on Wednesday. Earlier, they had observed a work stoppage at the factory from the morning. The blockade continued until 2:30 PM.
According to the workers, the factory authorities had promised to pay their outstanding September wages by October 13 following a protest on October 10. However, they took to the streets again after the authorities failed to fulfil the commitment. They also demanded that wages be paid by the seventh of every month.
Farhad, the factory's production manager, said wages could not be paid on Tuesday due to various complications. He assured the workers that their wages would be paid by Wednesday.
Members of the police and industrial police went to the spot after receiving reports of the blockade.
Swapan Kumar, officer-in-charge of the Sreepur sub-zone of Gazipur Industrial Police, said the workers initially staged a peaceful sit-in inside the factory to demand one month's outstanding wages before blocking the road.
He added that the situation had returned to normal after police arrived at the scene.
