Testimony from 10 witnesses has been completed in the case over the 2018 attack on the convoy of former US ambassador to Bangladesh Marcia Bernicat, with nine accused facing trial.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nazmin Akter recorded the testimony of Police Inspector Moniruzzaman on Wednesday. Defence lawyer Gazi Faisal Islam confirmed that the witness was cross-examined by the defence.
The court set January 11 next year for the next witness and ordered the complainant, Dr Badiul Alam Majumdar, to be cross-examined again.
The case was filed with Mohammadpur Police Station on August 10, 2018, by Majumdar over the attack on Bernicat’s convoy.
On January 18, 2021, the investigation officer submitted a charge sheet. Following further investigation, the Detective Branch of police filed a supplementary charge sheet on September 19, 2023, naming nine accused, including Mohammad Ishtiaq Mahmud, Majumdar’s brother-in-law. The court subsequently ordered the trial to begin on November 19, 2023.
The supplementary charge sheet lists 28 witnesses. Testimony began on March 28, 2022, but the case was sent for further investigation in December that year after three witnesses mentioned IshtiaqChhatra Mahmud in their statements.
The accused include several current or former leaders and members of Bangladesh Chhatra League, the ruling-party student wing at the time, along with other individuals.
