Mohanagar Express will operate on the Dhaka-Cox’s Bazar route from October 26, allowing passengers from several intermediate districts to travel directly to the tourist destination, but the train will no longer stop at Kumira station.
Mohammad Shafiqul Rahman, chief operating superintendent of Bangladesh Railway’s eastern zone, said the route extension was part of a plan to increase train services on the Dohazari-Cox’s Bazar rail line.
According to the revised schedule, train No. 721 will leave Cox’s Bazar at 8AM and reach Chattogram at 12:20PM. It will depart Chattogram at 12:30PM and arrive in Dhaka at 6:30PM.
Train No. 722 will leave Dhaka at 8:30PM, reach Chattogram at 2:40AM and depart at 3AM for Cox’s Bazar, where it is scheduled to arrive at 6AM.
The train will offer Shovon Chair, Snigdha, AC Seat and AC Berth classes. Passengers from Feni, Cumilla, Brahmanbaria, Narsingdi and several other stations will be able to travel directly to Cox’s Bazar.
With the addition of Mahanagar Express, the number of train pairs operating on the route will rise to five. The train will have 16 coaches and 1,366 seats, with the full journey expected to take around nine and a half hours.
However, railway staff have raised concerns that the single-track section between Chattogram and Dohazari and short loop lines at some stations could complicate train crossings and disrupt schedules.
The cancellation of the Kumira stop will also require passengers from the area to use alternative trains or transport to travel to Cox’s Bazar.
