Candidates who were recommended for appointment as assistant teachers at government primary schools but did not receive appointment letters have withdrawn their hunger strike following assurances that their cases would be reviewed through a fresh verification process.

The candidates announced the suspension around midnight on Tuesday, after receiving assurances from senior officials of the Directorate of Primary Education (DPE).

Jahid Hasan, one of the affected candidates, confirmed the development on Wednesday, saying they had suspended the indefinite hunger strike following assurances from DPE Additional Director General Abdur Rahim and Director (Administration) Kamrul Islam.

“Following the assurances of the additional director general and the director (administration), we have suspended our hunger strike. As instructed by the additional director general, all affected candidates will submit individual applications today,” he said.

The candidates warned that they would resume an indefinite protest next month if the issue remained unresolved and appointment letters were not issued by the end of October.

Earlier on Tuesday evening, five candidates met Abdur Rahim at around 8pm for discussions lasting approximately 20 minutes. They were asked to submit separate applications outlining their cases.

Officials told them that the applications would be reviewed and forwarded to the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, which would then decide on the appointments.

Meanwhile, 26 affected candidates met officials from the DPE's administration wing and submitted copies of their admission cards and a memorandum. All the candidates are also expected to file individual applications.

However, the authorities have yet to clarify how the verification process will proceed or when a final decision on their appointments will be made.

According to the DPE, a total of 83 candidates received final recommendations for appointment but have yet to receive their appointment letters. The candidates allege that they have not been given clear explanations for withholding the letters.

The affected candidates from the 2025 recruitment batch began their hunger strike outside the DPE headquarters at 10am on October 11, protesting the delay despite receiving final recommendations.

After nearly 62 hours of continuous hunger strike, several participants fell ill, prompting the candidates to suspend the protest and pursue the application process following assurances from the authorities.
