Narayanganj District and Sessions Judge Court has granted fresh bail to former Narayanganj City Corporation mayor Dr Selina Hayat Ivy in a murder case over the death of rickshaw puller Tuhin during the July movement.
As she left the court and got into her car, Ivy raised the slogan 'Joy Bangla', adding, 'Joy Bangla cannot be suppressed.'
Ivy is a senior vice-president of the Narayanganj district unit of the banned Awami League.
Reports said she had obtained bail from the High Court in all the cases filed against her.
According to the case records, rickshaw puller Tuhin was killed on July 20, 2024, in front of BRAC Bank on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Siddhirganj.
Former lawmaker Shamim Osman was named the prime accused, while Ivy was listed as the 11th accused in the case.
Ivy arrived at the district court at 10:55AM on Tuesday amid tight security. A large number of lawyers, journalists and supporters were present.
During the hearing, Ivy’s lawyer, Advocate Awlad Hossain, told the court that police had submitted a final report in the case.
He said investigators had found no evidence of explosives and had not found evidence linking Ivy to the alleged crime. He also noted that the complainant, Aleya Akter Mim, the victim’s wife, had not appeared in court despite being served notice.
Following the submission of the final report, the defence sought its acceptance and renewed bail for Ivy.
Prosecution opposes bail
Public Prosecutor Zakir Hossain opposed the bail application, saying the prosecution would file a naraji petition- a formal objection to the police investigation report.
In response, Awlad Hossain and other defence lawyers questioned the legal basis on which the public prosecutor intended to file such an objection.
After hearing arguments from both sides, Narayanganj District and Sessions Judge Abu Shamim Azad granted Ivy fresh bail in the case.
The court’s decision follows the police submission of a final report, though the prosecution indicated that it intended to challenge the report.
