The government plans to drill 150 onshore gas wells to boost domestic exploration and production, Planning State Minister Zunaid Abdur Rahim Saki said on Monday (October 12).
The government has taken initiatives to drill 30 wells in the current fiscal year, with work underway on three, he said at a seminar organised by the Bay of Bengal Research Centre at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB).
Saki said the government was also pursuing offshore gas exploration through new production-sharing contracts, while prioritising national interests.
He stressed the importance of developing the blue economy, including shipbuilding, port management and infrastructure, to help transform Bangladesh into a $1 trillion economy by 2034.
He also called for stronger coordination among the government, universities and the private sector to develop skilled manpower and unlock the country's marine resources.
