Two speedboats were set ablaze and sunk in the Padma River during a clash between two rival pirate groups over control of the river in Kushtia's Bheramara upazila on Sunday (October 11).
Several rounds of gunfire were also reported during the incident.
The incident took place around noon near the river areas adjoining Arkandi, Lisendia and Madhabpur in Bahadurpur union of Bheramara upazila.
According to eyewitnesses and local sources, four speedboats were operating in the river when one group chased two boats belonging to the rival group. Those aboard the two boats left them near the riverbank and fled.
The rival pirates then poured petrol on the boats and set them on fire. Local residents managed to bring the fire under control. However, the damaged boats were later taken to the middle of the river in another speedboat and sunk.
Locals said the clash stemmed from a dispute over control of the river.
Bheramara Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shamim Sheikh said the incident took place in an area under the jurisdiction of the river police, which would conduct the necessary investigation and take legal action.
“I have heard that speedboats caught fire. But I cannot say how the fire started,” he said.
Meanwhile, attempts to contact officials at the Laxmikunda River Police Outpost for further details were unsuccessful as their mobile phones were switched off.
