Marubeni eyes fresh investment in Bangladesh’s energy, IT sectors

Japanese trading and investment giant Marubeni Corporation has expressed interest in expanding its investments in Bangladesh, with potential opportunities in information technology, artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, fertiliser and energy.

A high-level delegation led by Marubeni President and CEO Masayuki Omoto met Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Prime Minister’s Office in the Secretariat on Sunday to discuss investment opportunities, bilateral trade and broader economic cooperation.

During the meeting, the Japanese delegation outlined the company’s interest in investing in promising sectors of Bangladesh’s economy.

The Prime Minister said his government was working to create a favourable environment for domestic and foreign investment to harness the country’s economic potential and generate employment.

He welcomed Marubeni’s interest in investing in Bangladesh’s IT, fertiliser and energy sectors, while calling for stronger commercial ties between the two countries.

The prime minister also highlighted Marubeni’s longstanding business relationship with Bangladesh in jute products, stressing the need to build on the existing partnership and expand cooperation into new areas.

The discussions also covered plans to enhance the skills of Bangladeshi engineering graduates in information technology and cybersecurity.

The meeting highlighted Bangladesh’s potential to emerge as an important international services hub by leveraging its skilled workforce, technological capabilities and competitive service offerings.

Both sides discussed opportunities to expand Japanese investment, strengthen bilateral trade and explore new areas of technological and industrial cooperation.
